Born in 1989, Michael Demetriou is an English-Cypriot director, writer and producer. He began his career with short film Tritos (2010) and later entered the advertising world, using it as a platform to create more innovative short films known for their unique tone and views on social expectations.
In 2015, he wrote, directed and produced Telephone Me - a 15-minute short, shot on 16mm by Rina Yang BSC. The film is a raw, unflinching portrayal of toxic masculinity within young men during their university-era. It premiered on No Budge and went on to receive a Vimeo Staff Pick, numerous write-ups and currently stands at 100K views online.
HELLSPAWN (2022), his most personal film to date, follows a group of 20-something creatives in their attempts to survive the UK advertising industry, as their artistic aspirations slip further and further away. Similarly relentless and stylistically singular, adamant on shooting 16mm and unable to find a DP to commit to a no-budget film, Michael undertook helming the camera himself - an additional feat. The film went on to receive numerous awards and played in competition at the London Short Film Festival as well as receiving Honorary Distinction at the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus - a festival close to his heart.
Currently, he is in post-production on his next film, The Inescapable You, a ruthless 20-minute dissection of Jewish identity, starring musician Traitor and film and theatre icon Peter Marinker (Judge Dredd, Fear is the Key)
